Can I connect a wireless printer to laptop if I have dial up? -

I just bought a HP Photosmart C6380 All-in-one wireless printer. We only have dial up available on our laptop. Is there a way to use the wireless feature on our laptop without a router? I am not familiar with how routers and wireless works. So please bear with me if I don t make since with how I asked my question.

Dialup is how you connect to the Internet, and has no bearing on your internal network inside your home. 802.11a/b/g/n is commonly referred to as WiFi. WiFi, by extension, is often called wireless Internet, though this is not entirely accurate. You can connect to the Internet with WiFi service, but this is typically found only in major cities, and only in the downtown core. It simply doesn t have the range. Satellite Internet service is also wireless, but you don t see people calling it WiFi. Anyway, WiFi is used to connect all sorts of devices, notably laptops, printers, and PC s. *A router is not strictly necessary for this.* A consumer router acts as a firewall (blocks unwanted connections from the Internet) and a switch (directs network traffic). Computers connected to it can communicate with each other, and also share an Internet connection. I don t know of any router that can interface with a dialup connection, however. Typically broadband is used, as broadband modems share a common connector (RJ45) with nearly every networkable consumer device made. You should be able to do what is known as an adhoc connection between the printer and your laptop, ASSUMING BOTH HAVE WIRELESS CAPABILITY. This guide should be sufficient. Substitute the second PC for your printer. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using… You may need to connect to your printer via a USB connection to configure its network settings. Or maybe it has factor defaults, which should be listed in the manual. gl!

You will need a wireless lan adapter for your laptop for this. It can either be in the form of a PCMCIA card or USB adapter.
