How can you tell what is hooked to what port? -

Have had a printer forever, my computer changed and did not have to 16 pin( or that is what i will call it) so had to hook to USB port. Having said that is has worked but now does not. How can i tell which port it is hooked to. should it be checked by offline printing?? Help
