How do I print to from to an XP shared HP PhotoSmart from a Mac? -

I have a Mac running 10.4.10, and XP service pack 2. I have a HP Photosmart c4200, connected to the xp machine via USB, which prints fine, and the printer is shared. I have a network set up on the PCs (workgroup). I can see the network on the mac, but not the printer. Detailed instruction would be most helpful

Samba shares (SMB) provides connectivity for OSX to Windows shares and printers. You may need to install the Samba services for OSX first. You ll be asked for the Windows Workgroup the same way you are on an XP box. Samba will allow you to see the XP PC on your network from your browser. It will also allow you to select and configure the printer. Keep in mind that personal firewalls on the XP and Mac may prevent access. So check that out first. If your not able to browser to the XP box, your somehow blocked. OSX HP drivers for your printer are likely to be proprietary. So download the latest for the HP site and follow the specific instructions HP gives. Hope this helps. P

http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3015.html I don t know if there is an HP 4200 series listed so look for it when it s time to choose it. Or you can manually add it using the PCs IP address. How to manually add a Windows shared printer 1. Open Printer Setup Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities). 2. Mac OS X 10.4.x users: Choose Add Printer from the Printers menu, then hold the Option key while clicking the quot;More Printersquot; button. Mac OS X 10.3.x users: Hold the Option key down while choosing Add Printer from the Printers menu. 3. Choose Advanced from the first pop-up menu. 4. Choose Windows Printer via SAMBA from the Device pop-up menu. 5. In the Device Name field, type the name you would like to use for this printer in Mac OS X. 6. In the Device URI field, use one of the following formats to link to the printer: smb://user:password@workgroup/server/sha… smb://user:password@server/sharename smb://workgroup/server/sharename smb://server/sharename Notes: quot;userquot; is the name of a Windows user who has privileges to use the printer. quot;passwordquot; is the password of that Windows user. quot;workgroupquot; is the name of the Windows workgroup to which the computer sharing the printer belongs. quot;serverquot; is the name of the computer sharing the printer or its IP address. quot;sharenamequot; is the shared Windows printer s share name. Tip: You don t need a quot;workgroupquot; when specifying the IP address of the computer (such as when the printer is on a different subnet), or if your Mac belongs to the same Windows (SMB) workgroup. 7. Choose the appropriate PPD or printer driver from the Printer Model pop-up menu. 8. Click Add. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?…
