What do I need to/How do I print wirelessly from my printer? -

My bedroom is upstairs and the printer is downstairs hooked up to another PC. How would I wirelessly print from it without having to put it to my flash drive and go downstairs to print it?

setup printer sharing on that pc. To share your printer Open Printers and Faxes. Right-click the printer you want to share, and then click Sharing. The options you see on the Sharing tab differ depending on whether sharing is enabled on your computer. For instructions on what to do next, click the option that describes what you see on the Sharing tab. I see text stating that printer sharing must be turned on You need to enable printer sharing by running the Network Setup Wizard. Start it by clicking the link on the Sharing tab, and then follow the instructions. Once sharing is enabled, begin this procedure again. I see options for sharing or not sharing the printer On the Sharing tab, click Share this printer, and then, in the Share name box, type a name for the shared printer. If you share the printer with users on different hardware or different operating systems, click Additional Drivers. Click the environment and operating system for the other computers, and then click OK to install the additional drivers. Drivers for users running other versions of Windows (Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0) are located on the Support CD. Printer drivers for Windows NT 3.1 and Windows NT 3.5 are not included. Click OK, or, if you have installed additional drivers, click Close. If you have followed the steps listed above and still cannot share this printer, open Windows Firewall. (To open Windows Firewall, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Windows Firewall.) Then, on the Exceptions tab, select the File and Printer Sharing check box. Notes To open Printers and Faxes, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Printers and Faxes. You can also share a printer in Printers and Faxes by clicking the printer you want to share, and then clicking Share this printer under Tasks in the left pane. This option is available only if folders are set to look like a Web page and a printer is selected. For more information, click Related Topics. Printers are not shared by default when you install them on Windows XP Professional, but you can choose to share any printer you install on your computer. When you publish a printer in Active Directory, other users logged onto the Windows domain will be able to search for the printer based on its location and features such as how many pages it prints per minute and whether color printing is supported.

You need to network your computers and enable File amp; Printer sharing. You will obviously need a wireless router somewhere in the picture as well and If your printer is hooked up direct to the downstairs computer, that computer will have to be on for you to print. Otherwise you could also get a network printer server (about $60), assign an IP and have a quot;networkquot; printer.

enable network printing from your main computer that is hooked up to it. then just install the software from the printer to your pc/laptop and your good to go.

First, of course, the PC downstairs will need to be on. Then the printer will need to be shared on that computer. Upstairs, you will need to install the printer as a network-connected device and use the machine name and share name from the downstairs PC as the path.

There are actually alot of different ways to solve this problem. I will try to explain as many as possible until I get tired. First you have to find out if your printer already has wireless built in. Some fancy printers already have it. If not, you will have to buy a wireless print kit from Circuit City. Found here...http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-bt450-… This will turn your printer into a wifi connection or bluetooth connection so then you can locate the wifi connection via a wireless card. For example laptops have a wireless card built in. Depending upon if you have a Desktop or laptop in your bedroom, you might have to buy a wireless dekstop adapter.... Anywho...Then in your bedroom, on your computer, you will need to(for windows xp) install the software it came with and connect to the printer. If your wanting the other computer downstairs to connect to the printer, you might have to get another wireless print kit for the other computer. Another way is to get a wireless router for the downstairs. Since the computer is already hooked up to the downstairs computer, plug the computer into the wireless router to make it wifi which also makes your printer wifi...in a sort of sense. Now, use your computer upstairs, assuming its got wireless card of some sort, and connect to the router also by search for wireless connections in the area and connecting to it. NOW, here is a little tricky part. If running windows xp, or anything below, go to START gt; PRINTER AND FAXES. If you dont have that shortcut, go to START gt; CONTROL PANEL gt; PRINTER AND FAXES. Then on the left hand side there is a quot;Add Printer.quot; If you dont see that go to FILE gt; ADD PRINTER. Here you will tell your computer that there is a printer downstairs. There will be a setup wizard. When it asks you how you want to set it up, choose a network printer or a printer connected to another computer. To make it easy select quot;Browse for a printer and it wil locate servers or computer that have a printer hooked up. If all went well, it will find your printer on your downstairs computer and then go from there and it will install the necessary files and drivers it needs, If it didnt find it then you need to go to the downstairs computer and go to START gt; CONTROL PANEL gt; PRINTER AND FAXES. Right click the printer and click on quot;Sharing...quot; There you will tell it to be visible on the network and it will then show up on your upstairs computer when browing for a printer. If that doesnt work, your downstairs computer has a non-windows firewall, like zonealarm or norton. In that case, you will have to go into the settings of that program and tell it to allow your printer to share itself over the network. If all works correctly, the only way for your upstairs computer to work on the downstairs printer is that the downstairs computer is on. The printer is going through the downstairs computer and if its off, your laptop cannot reach the printer. Keep that in mind. ;p Another way is to hire someone to come out and do it for you. You are probably looking at $150 + depending on which company you go through. I currently work for Circuit City. I cant state a price on here because prices change but we would charge you for 2 computer to work off of one printer around $149.99 + the parts we would need to hook it up. Another way is to buy a printer that has a wifi/bluetooth card already on it. It will state it has it on the box so you know before you buy it. Then, all you have to do is connect to it via your wireless card from your laptop. THAT would be the EASIEST way. =P Of course the printers run you abot $399+ BUT they are awesome printers and will last you a lfe time if you treat them right. Hope that helps for you.
