On your work computer, the admin priviledges and other settings may be determined by your I.T. team or the system administrators. So even simple things like your wallpaper may be set each time you reboot your system. Printers may also be set to default to certain options. You may not be able to solve this unless your system admins configure it to allow you guys to set it.
Some application you re using to send a file to a non-default printer might then be assigning it as your default. Can you detect a pattern to the mis-assignments, say, by printer or by cause-and-effect?
Go to Start gt; Printers and Faxes gt; RIGHT Click the Printer to set Default gt; Click Set as Default Printer
